It’s been a fascinating journey for former Notre Dame pass rusher Julian Okwara , who was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday. Okwara began his career with the Detroit Lions, where he was selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

There were obviously some high expectations for Okwara, who is a very gifted athlete. Unfortunately, his Lions career did not materialize like everyone would have hoped. In four years in Detroit, Okwara collected 54 total tackles, 12 tackles for loss, nine sacks, and 16 quarterback hits. His best season came in 2021, where Okwara finished with five sacks and six tackles for loss.

The 6-4, 250-pound pass rusher had some tremendous moments while a part of the Notre Dame program, but never seemed to take the massive step he was capable of. In 45 games for the Irish, he was able to collect 77 total tackles, 23 tackles for loss, 14.5 sacks, two interceptions and four forced fumbles. Okwara’s best season came in 2018, which included 12.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks.

There was some buzz when the Philadelphia Eagles signed Okwara this offseason, seeming like a potential revival coming to the NFC East. With the departure of Haason Reddick this offseason, there was also a need for more outside pass rush. Unfortunately, Okwara was not able to find his footing. His next move will be very interesting to watch.
