The Colts didn't learn from their mistake last year, with the team making puzzling decisions to cut their roster down to 53

The Indianapolis Colts finalized their initial 53-man roster on Tuesday.

It included the team cutting three rookies they drafted in the 2024 NFL Draft. This is just a year after the team did the same with CB Darius Rush and lost him on waivers.

Instead of prioritizing their young promising talent: Micah Abraham (CB), Jaylin Simpson (CB/S), and Jonah Laulu the Colts elected to give initial roster spots to players like Taven Bryan (DT), Darrell Baker Jr. (CB) and Rodney Thomas II (S).

Now, all three of these 2024 draft picks will hit waivers, and the other 31 teams will have the chance to poach them from the Colts before they can place them on their practice squad. If the Colts' roster was just too deep to roster said players, I'd understand, but that isn't the case.

Bryan, for example, is a fifth DT who won't play on special teams and is only playable in obvious passing-down situations. And he seems to be deep down the pecking order even to see the field in those situations. So why not give Laulu that spot ?

At CB, the Colts are desperate for playmakers and elected to go with Baker Jr. over two young players with upside to develop. If the Colts are lucky, they will be able to get all three back after the waiver period ends tomorrow at 12 p.m. EST. But losing Rush last year (who the team wanted back) should have shown them that this game is too risky to play with young players. Now, they will have to wait and see and hope their luck is better this time around. Right now, their already questionable secondary is paper thin as well.
