Two NFL Super Bowl contenders tried to sign the newest Indianapolis Colts defensive back but failed

The Indianapolis Colts claimed former San Francisco 49ers cornerback Samuel Womack III off of waivers .

And it appears they weren't the only team interested in the CB. Two of the NFL's clear Super Bowl contenders also submitted waiver claims for the CB.

Womack had the second most teams submit waiver claims of any player on the first waiver wire following cut-down day. The Eagles and Chiefs tried to add the third-year CB along with the Colts. The only player with more waiver claims submitted was CB Shemar Bartholomew, who landed with the Carolina Panthers.

The Colts' new CB is entering his third NFL season, which began with the 49ers drafting him with the 172nd pick in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He has appeared in 23 games and recorded 26 total tackles, one interception, and two pass deflections in his young career. The majority of his snaps for the 49ers came on special teams, with him logging 338 snaps over the past two years compared to his 216 defensive snaps.

On the Colts, he projects best as a backup nickel CB to Kenny Moore II, with no real competition for that spot currently on the team's roster. While the Eagles and Chiefs may be viewed as the better teams, I think Womack landed in a spot where he will be given a real shot to earn rotational snaps on defense and likely serve as a key special teamer.

I'm sure the Colts feel lucky the two teams who tried to add Womack were behind them on the priority list. This additon probably doesnt spark much excitement out of Colts fans, with Womack not being a house hold name in the NFL. But I think the fact that two of the NFL's bonafide Super Bowl contenders tried to add Womack should show fans he holds real value.
