Steelers QB Justin Fields catches a stray in former HC's blunt assessment of his peers

Since joining the Pittsburgh Steelers, Justin Fields has done nothing but mind his own business.

It wasn't a perfect camp or preseason for the 25-year-old signal caller, but there were signs of growth everywhere but perhaps his biggest fault: Turnovers.

And while current Dallas Cowboys DC and former Minnesota Vikings HC Mike Zimmer was aiming to take a shot at his former boss, Fields got caught in the crossfire:

Zimmer Says Fields 'Has Done Nothing'

"The first round, [Former Vikings GM Rick Spielman] tried to trade up for Justin Fields, who hasn’t done anything,” Zimmer said in an interview with The Minnesota Star Tribune.

Well, it depends on what you mean by nothing, but Zimmer certainly has ground to stand on here. Hopefully, Fields uses it as added motivation or an extra chip to stack his shoulders, but it's hard to completely dismiss Zimmer's take.

We'll dive deeper, but at the surface level, if a former top 12 pick, who is drafted to be the savior of a franchise, is off the team before his fourth year and now a backup in his new job, you could say he's done nothing.

But there's not enough context there. The Chicago Bears gave Justin Fields a house with nothing but a foundation, (which was shaky at best) threw him the keys, and said "Go figure it out."

This time around, rookie QB Caleb Williams moved into a million-dollar mansion with a three-car garage, swimming pool, and home theater.

The offensive line is better, the pass catchers are better, and the head coach and play caller are better when comparing Fields' time in Chicago to what Caleb Williams is set to oversee.

And look, that's not an excuse, that's a fact. Fields has a ways to go, but it was always  Russell Wilson's job, no matter how much the national media tried to spin a QB narrative.

How long it stays his job remains to be seen.
