Pair of former Tennessee Vols assistants involved in some early-season college football drama

A pair of former Tennessee Vols assistant coaches found themselves embroiled in some early-season college football drama this week.

Western Kentucky will host Eastern Kentucky this weekend in a game that was promoted during the summer as a "white out" for WKU.

The Hilltoppers were planning to wear white jerseys and white helmets for the game. But on Wednesday, Western Kentucky released a statement saying that Eastern Kentucky had exercised their option (as the away team) to wear white jerseys. That means Western Kentucky will have to wear their red jerseys despite the planned "white out".

According to Western Kentucky's statement, both teams have to agree to a uniform switch. And Eastern Kentucky simply isn't going to agree to it.

Former Tennessee offensive coordinator Tyson Helton is the head coach at Western Kentucky while former Vols offensive line coach Walt Wells is the head coach at Eastern Kentucky.

(Helton was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee in 2018. Wells was a quality control coach at Tennessee in 2016. He was promoted to offensive line coach ahead of the 2017 season. The two coaches were never on staff together at Tennessee.)

There's nothing like some early season pettiness (which is part of what makes college football so much fun). It should be a spicy matchup between Western Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky this weekend.
