An Abbotsford man accused of fatally stabbing his two young children and seriously wounding their mother will make an initial appearance Tuesday in Clark County Circuit Court, where a judge has already approved an order for a competency exam.

Victor Gomez Acosta, who was also given medical treatment before being transferred to the Clark County Jail, was arrested July 5 after police discovered two children dead inside a home on Oak Street in Abbotsford. Police say the children did of multiple stab wounds and showed no signs of life when officers arrived.

The children’s mother suffered 17 stab wounds and was taken to a hospital for treatment and surgery. The victim allegedly told police she was sleeping when the attack began.

In initial interviews with police, Gomez Acosta allegedly said “crazy” people stabbed him and told officers her children were “with God,” court documents state.

The attacks were reported by the children’s mother, who called 911 from a nearby relative’s home at about 1:30 a.m. the morning of the attack.

Gomez Acosta is jailed on a $1 million cash bond and is ordered not to have any contact with the woman or her family. Prosecutors filed charges against him on July 9. An order for a competency examination, to be performed by the Department of Health Services, was signed on July 12.

On Tuesday, Gomez will officially appear on two counts of first-degree intentional homicide and an additional charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide. He faces mandatory life in prison if he is convicted of the most serious charges.

You are advised that a charge is merely an accusation and that a defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
