LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – More affordable housing is on the way in Lancaster. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity have their vision in mind: condominiums for low-income families.

The location will be 913 Wheatland Avenue, it’s currently a vacant parking lot that was used for the former Saint Joseph’s Hospital.

“We’re planning and have zoning approval for eight units,” President and CEO of Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity Andrew Szalay said.

Szalay says this is a small piece they can do that is affecting so many Pennsylvanians.

“There are 97,000 units [needed] and in Lancaster County that’s some 20,000 units to meet the demand,” Szalay said.

These eight units are reserved for first-time homebuyers that make 40-80% of the area median income for Lancaster County.

“If our homebuyers are unable to be able to support that mortgage at our appraised value based on what the market is when we start to build them in 2026 that’s fine,” Szalay said. “We actually have the super power or the blessing to be able to make sure their first mortgage is no more than 30% of gross income.”

Szalay says one in eight families in Pennsylvania are paying more than 50% of their gross income on housing.
