Abilene police officers shot and killed a man during a standoff Tuesday afternoon, according to a statement from the Abilene Police Department.

On the afternoon of July 2, officers were dispatched to the corner of South Seventh Street and Alameda Street for a disturbance in progress.

Officers reported Jeremy Bennett, 36, was allegedly brandishing a handgun and threatening two women.

Bennett fled the original crime scene and barricaded himself in a separate nearby residence, according to allegations in the media release. While working to get a warrant for the residence, officers discovered Bennett had an active, unrelated warrant for felon in possession of a firearm.

Officers set a perimeter around the secondary crime scene and called in the SWAT and crisis negotiations teams. Crisis negotiators made contact with Bennett and negotiated for several hours in an attempt to take him into custody peacefully.

The SWAT team deployed gas multiple times into the residence, according to the statement.

At some point, Bennett, holding the weapon, exited the residence, according to alleagtions. Officers commanded Bennett to discard the weapon multiple times and used a less lethal impact weapon that was ineffective.

Bennett allegedly raised the firearm in a threatening manner and allegedly pointed it in the direction of police officers, according to the APD media release.

Officers discharged their firearms at Bennett, striking him. Abilene Fire Department medics were on scene and provided medical aid, but Bennett ultimately died at a local hospital due to his injuries.

Bennett's next of kin were notified, and all involved officers will be placed on paid administrative leave per department policy, according to the statement.

Texas Rangers and the Abilene Police Department Major Investigations Bureau are simultaneously investigating the incident.

This marks the third officer-involved shooting in Abilene which resulted in a fatality in 2024.

The prior fatalities involved a man allegedly wielding a blade on May 6 at a United Supermarket and a woman who barricaded herself in her home and allegedly opened fire on police April 30, according to the APD.
