Florida dog owners are now mandated to walk their dogs on a leash

If you’re a dog owner, you might want to grab that leash because there’s a new rule in town. The Mount Dora City Council has just passed Ordinance 2024-15, and it’s a game-changer for pet lovers in our area.

As of now, all pets must be leashed when they’re not securely confined. That’s right—whether you’re strolling through the park or just letting your furry friend roam the yard, if your property isn’t fenced in, your pup needs to be on a leash.

Why the change? According to the city council, the new ordinance comes in response to complaints from residents and concerns raised by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office about “nuisance animals.” It seems like some pet owners were letting their animals roam a bit too freely, and this new rule aims to keep everyone—both pets and people—happy and safe.

The ordinance aligns Mount Dora’s pet regulations with those of Lake County, giving local police and sheriff’s deputies the authority to enforce these rules. If you’re caught with an unleashed pet, you could face a fine of $150 for the first offense. And if you’re a repeat offender within five years, that fine jumps to $500.

The city’s message on social media made it clear: the rule is effective immediately. So, if you’ve been letting your dog have a bit of freedom in your yard, you’ll need to ensure your property is securely fenced or keep your pup on a leash.
