Whitey’s Fish Camp, a beloved establishment that has been serving the community since 1963. Known for its fresh seafood, boat rentals, and campground, Whitey’s has become a staple in the area, attracting both locals and visitors for decades. However, recent developments have cast a shadow over this longstanding institution.

Earlier this year, news of Whitey’s being up for sale sparked a wave of nostalgia and concern among its loyal patrons. The owners, who are now in their 60s and 70s, decided to retire due to health issues. Despite their intention for the eatery to remain unchanged under new ownership, the establishment recently faced an unexpected hurdle.

On August 2, 2024, a state inspection led by the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation uncovered multiple health violations at Whitey’s Fish Camp. The inspection revealed 16 violations, which ranged from basic to high-priority issues:

    • Basic Violations: These included the presence of dead roaches, a soiled floor, standing water, food preparation in the dining area, and mold-like substances inside the ice machine.
    • Intermediate Violations: Issues such as a pan and strainer found in the hand wash sink and black staining on a cutting board were noted.
    • High-Priority Violations: The inspection identified live roaches, rodent droppings, and cold foods, like cheese and tuna, held at unsafe temperatures above 41 degrees.

Due to these serious violations, Whitey’s Fish Camp was temporarily shut down. The closure aimed to address the health concerns and ensure compliance with sanitation standards.

However, the restaurant's troubles were short-lived. A follow-up inspection on August 3, 2024, reported that all violations had been corrected. Whitey’s Fish Camp was found to meet inspection standards and was cleared to reopen.

Despite this recent setback, Whitey’s remains a cherished part of Florida’s culinary landscape, celebrated for its generous portions of seafood and its vibrant atmosphere, which has been a favorite among locals and music enthusiasts alike. As the establishment continues to operate, it is expected to regain its standing as a beloved icon in the community.
