The Akron Zoo has another baby penguin.

The arrival of Calida (pronounced cah-lee-duh) marks the second birth of a Humboldt penguin at the zoo this year.

Calida hatched on June 27, and zoo officials say she is being cared for by her parents, Pedro and Anchovetta, under the watchful eyes of their keepers.

Once she is weaned, has molted her downy feathers and passes her swimming tests, zoo officials say she will join the penguin colony in the public habitat.

    Calida means "warm" in Spanish.

The other penguin chick, Tercera (tere-sara), which means “third” in Spanish, was hatched in March from an egg that came from the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium as part of the Humboldt Penguin Species Survival Plan.

Calida is the 21st penguin to hatch at the Akron Zoo since its Penguin Point opened in 2003.

Native to the the coasts of Peru and Chile, Humboldt penguins  are considered vulnerable to extinction.
