AKRON, Iowa (KCAU) – Akron-Westfield advances to its second-ever State Tournament following a 13-0 win over Kingsley-Pierson/River Valley in its 1A-1 Substate Final.

The Westerners, who secured its first War Eagle Conference title outright in 34 years, have one of the most successful pitchers in 1A this season in Nathan Gaswint. The sophomore is tied for second in the class in wins with nine.

A-W’s bats have been electric in 2024 with eight players in its lineup batting over .300. Making it to State has been the vision for Akron-Westfield, but they know there is much more to accomplish.

“We talked about it as a team before the season and the goal was to get there and compete deep in the tournament. We’ve gotten to this point and that’s a great accomplishment, but we are concentrating on winning Monday.” Akron-Westfield head coach Gordy Johnson said.

“It’s pretty special. We’ve only ever done it once, so hopefully we can go and make some noise. We’ve been playing since we were pretty young, so we had this goal coming into year. The last couple of years have been kind of tough, so we knew this year could be our year.” Akron-Westfield senior Laytin Koch added.

Top-seeded Akron-Westfield opens State Tournament play on July 22nd against Bedford at 11:00 a.m. at Merchants Park in Carroll.
