Residents of Sandy Beach Trailer Park in Akron, Ohio, are on high alert after more than 50 bowls of anti-freeze aimed at poisoning the community cats were found scattered throughout the mobile home property.
Over 40 cats — some strays, others family pets — live at the trailer park. Humane Society officials are now investigating to find whoever is trying to harm the felines.
Residents of an Akron mobile home park say cats are being poisoned
Animal rescue groups found bowls containing the poisonous anti-freeze on Friday, Feb. 23.
According to WKYC 3News , pet rescues often carry out operations to curb the growing cat population at the Sandy Beach Trailer Park. However, they only use a humane strategy — which they refer to as TNR — to control the cat population.
“‘TNR’ is Trap-Neuter-Return. We trap them, get them spayed or neutered , we give them vaccines, we give them flea medicine. Then we return them to the park and owners,” Larry Stall, a resident, told the news outlet.
Cameron Kennedy, who works with The Humane Bean Rescue , said they found the poisoned bowls while returning the cats to the trailer park after a successful TNR.
“We started doing TNR a few weeks ago in this park. On Wednesday we had done 21 cats, raised over $2,000 from donors. We contacted the park owner and told her what we were doing. We told them we were going to be bringing the cats back,” Kennedy shared.
“Two days after that, we found over 50 bowls of what looked like antifreeze distributed around the park. We picked up all the bowls we could find and we’ve been monitoring the cats.”
Thankfully, no cat has fallen victim to these poisonous traps, as per Cleveland 19 News reports. The rescue groups reported the matter to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, and Summit County Humane Society agents are now investigating.
Beth Evans with the Humane Society condemned the poisoning attempts on the innocent cats.
“I think there’s something wrong with their mind, with their makeup and to kill a harmless animal makes me wonder what they’ll do to people or children,” she said.
