Summit County Historical Society to celebrate 100 years

Pick a decade. Any decade. Then dress up like it.

Honorary chairs Dave Lieberth, society board chair emeritus, Akron History Center president and Akron Bicentennial executive secretary, and Judi Hill, NAACP president and past society director, invite the public to celebrate 100 years of preserving and sharing local history. Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro is the presenting sponsor.

Guests are encouraged to wear clothing reflecting a favorite decade. As the society notes: “Let’s be fun, festive or casual, and most importantly, be comfortable!”

The event will include a local history exhibit featuring artifacts that will go on display in the Akron History Center, which opens later this year. Gerald Harris will provide musical entertainment.

Tickets, $100, include heavy hors d’oeuvres, classic desserts and a drink. For an additional $50, attendees can purchase an option for “History with Dave in the Den,” which takes guests to a secret location on another floor for a drink and Akron-themed appetizers, along with a brief history lesson from Lieberth.

Silent auction teasers include a bourbon tasting with Joe Abraham, society director emeritus, at the mansion and a themed dinner by Chef Dan Remark of the Magic City’s Remarkable Diner.

The Summit County Historical Society was incorporated July 12, 1924, to prepare for Akron’s centennial in 1925.

Seven women from the Cuyahoga-Portage Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution signed the document: Minnie Weston Franz, Ada Rowe Allen, Eugenia Thomas Hay, Lillie Hart Joy, Mabelle Artman Caine and Grace Griffith Wise.
