OAKLAND, Calif. (KRON) — A team mom is accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the Alameda Gators Swim Team. Sarah Lynn New, 45, of Alameda, served as president for the youth sports club team.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office charged New with felony embezzlement this week.

“Ms. New allegedly embezzled a large number of funds from the swim team. She faces nine years in state prison if convicted of all charges,” District Attorney Pamela Price told reporters at a news conference held Wednesday in Oakland. New reportedly has a child on the Alameda Gators.

Prosecutors charged New “for the harm that has been caused to children who were directly impacted,” Price said.

The Alameda Gators Swim Team is a nonprofit organization that gave New access to manage its funds, Price said.

“Anytime there is a betrayal of trust by an adult, and it involves children, that is remarkable. We want to teach our children to be responsible civic-minded members of our community,” Price said.

When asked how New spent the swim team’s money, Price answered, “That’s under investigation.” She declined to reveal the total amount of money allegedly stolen. New reportedly works as a Pilates instructor for a gym in Alameda.

Santa Rita Jail inmate records show New is currently out of custody.
