Video: Suspected racer talks to police after Albuquerque crash kills 2

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Police alleged street racing caused a horrific crash last October in northeast Albuquerque. Newly-obtained video provides a look at the scene as it unfolded.

Two volleyball players were seriously hurt, and one of their mothers was killed in the crash. One of the drivers is charged and awaiting trial on homicide by vehicle reckless driving charges.

Body camera footage showed an off-duty firefighter explaining what was happening to the Albuquerque Police Department (APD) after three cars collided at the intersection of Louisiana and Dellwood.

Two of the three drivers didn’t survive the crash. The third driver, Andy Doreste-Saumell, is now charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle and more. He told officers a white Camry pulled out in front of his BMW and a Mini Cooper. He admitted to going slightly above the speed limit but said he wasn’t racing.

However, dash camera video was turned over to APD from a car following behind and showed something different. A nearby homeowner also gave officers surveillance video, showing the impact.

Dorset-Saumell had his girlfriend and 6-year-old son with him. None of them were injured, despite the fact it spun into a nearby brick wall. The Mini Cooper he was racing with flipped over, landing on its roof.

The driver, later identified as Tyler Turnbull, died at the scene. His passenger suffered major injuries. There were three people inside the Camry.

The driver, Jenna Hamilton, was pinned inside and passed away before officials could get her out. There were two kids with her: One suffered major injuries, and the other wasn’t hurt.

Andy Doreste-Saumell has pleaded not guilty to the charges. He was released under the supervision of pretrial services.
