ALDERSON, WV (WVNS) — Alderson’s famous Fourth of July celebration and the main event took place on the Greenbrier River.

The main event saw everyone heading down to Alderson Mini Park to watch everyone who wanted to join in race down the Greenbrier River against friends and family alike.

Briton Kirby, part of the Fourth of July committee, said that this event is meant to further bring the community together.

“This is a very family-oriented event. They have events up all evening and we’re gonna have a gospel sing tonight. We’re really excited. It’s gonna be a good day for everybody to bring their family out in good weather and have a good time.” said Kirby.

Participators chose from several different races including both men’s and women’s singles and doubles, mixed doubles, mother-child, father-child, and the six man-no paddle race.

The committee worked doubly hard to make sure Sunday’s events went as planned after experiencing a bit of a technical difficulty thanks to Mother Nature on Thursday.

Kirby said they rallied and everything went incredibly well, though.

“They turned out really well for us. We’re very proud of our fireworks show, it’s one of the only ground fireworks shows in the state, if not the country,” said Kirby. “So it’s an experience that everybody needs to have and for once in a while to have a free show that people can bring their families out to and not have to break the bank, it’s very important to us.”

Kirby said that everyone should look forward to the remaining events scheduled, including “Ducks on the Greenbrier”, also held on the Greenbrier River.

He said that tickets will be sold all the way up until race time at 6 in the evening on Monday, July 8th.

Kirby said this celebration is a lot of hard work and long hours, but that it is always worth it.

“But we’re glad to do it. We love doing this celebration, we’re gonna keep doing this celebration for as long as well possibly can.” said Kirby.

The Alderson Fourth of July Celebration officially ends once the last duck has crossed the finish line on the river.
