On the Origin of High Draft Picks
The Cleveland Guardians made history at the Fort Worth Stockyards on Sunday night, drafting Oregon State second baseman Travis Bazzana first overall. I planted my flag on Bazzana Island back in February, and noted that he could become the first Australian player drafted no. 1 overall, as well as the first player born and raised anywhere other than the U.S. or its dependencies. Keith Law pointed out that because no. 2 overall pick Chase Burns was born in Italy (though raised in Tennessee), 2024 marked the first time that both of the top two picks were born outside the U.S.
Venerable Cowtown Coliseum Rolls Out Red Carpet for Baseball's Future
Major League Baseball’s All-Star Weekend came to the bustling bricks of the Fort Worth Stockyards on Sunday seeking something resembling Rogers Hornsby. It was here after all in the famed meat packing district of Cowtown that Hornsby began his 23-year Hall of Fame career. He got his start on the North Side, playing at age 13 on the Armour meat packing plant team. He was an office clerk there. At 15, he was playing in an adult league in Fort Worth and a semipro team in Granbury.

Prospects 'Cowboy up' at the Stockyards ahead of Draft in Texas
FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- Some of the top Draft prospects in baseball took “Cowboy up” to a new level here ahead of the Draft. The six players in town to attend the MLB Draft came in early to get a tour of the Stockyards, a national historic district in Fort Worth. Cam Caminiti, Jurrangelo Cijntje, Kaelen Culpepper, Braden Montgomery, Christian Moore and JJ Wetherholt -- all potential first-round picks -- got a sense of the fashion, the customs and the flavors of the Stockyards.
Josh Hoover focusing on bringing TCU back among Big 12’s elite
LAS VEGAS — The quarterback was a true freshman on the sidelines in 2022, when Max Duggan led the Horned Frogs all the way to the National Championship Game. Josh Hoover shadowed Duggan, and learned how the Big 12 operated, in terms of speed and physicality. Coach Sonny Dykes played musical chairs with Hoover and Chandler Morris last season, and it resulted in a 5-7 campaign. However, Hoover was able to start the final six games, and had some memorable moments with his arm.
TCU Taps Brittani McLaurin as New Spirit Director
Even though many college sports fans aren’t on the field or the courts for their favorite events, their contribution to the outcome of a game cannot be underestimated. Cheers, chants, and symbols go a long way in helping a team maintain its edge in the face competition. It’s for this very reason many schools have professional spirit directors, to keep things hyped, so to speak. For instance, a well-choreographed routine doesn’t just show off a team’s spirit, it’s also a chance for each school to show off its dance skills. It’s for this very reason TCU just announced the hiring of Brittani McLaurin as the school’s new spirit director.
Countdown to Kickoff 2024: 47 Days
47 | LB Paul Dawson (2012-2014) A low three-star wide receiver prospect coming out of Dallas Skyline, ranked outside the top 1,300 in the 2011 recruiting class, Dawson chose the JUCO route, attending Trinity Valley Community College and converting to the other side of the ball as a linebacker. Dawson joined the Horned Frogs in 2012 and played in every TCU game for the next three seasons, earning Second Team All-Big 12 in 2013 and First Team All-Big 12 in 2014. Dawson’s signature moment came early in his senior season when No. 4 Oklahoma Sooners visited Amon G. Carter Stadium; in the fourth quarter of a tie game, Dawson leapt in front of a Trevor Knight pass and brought it home into the south endzone for what would prove to be the game-winning points. The Frogs would go on to win the Big 12, demolish Ole Miss in the Peach Bowl and finish the 2014 season ranked No. 3. Dawson delivered an outstanding stat line in 2014, totaling 136 tackles (20 for loss), 6 sacks, 4 interceptions, 9 pass break-ups, 2 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries, earning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Consensus All-American honors. Dawson would go on to be drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the Third Round of the 2015 NFL Draft.
