While the atrocities committed during this time are well documented, it’s a place fiction doesn’t often dare to go. While the boarding schools may not be the focus of “This Tender Land.” It does provide a bit of a backdrop for the story.

In Iowa, May was ridiculous. We average 11 tornadoes in May. But this year, we had over 80 tornadoes in May alone.

Iowa DNR Investigates Fish Kill in Northeast Iowa
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a northeast Iowa fish kill. On July 19th, the DNR Field Office in Manchester was notified of dead fish in Crane Creek, approximately two miles southwest of Readlyn in Bremer County. Officials believe the fish kill originated at 250th Street and Piedmont Avenue.
