Watch Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Pay Tribute to Jimmy Buffett with “Come Monday” Performance

Kenny Chesney brought his Sun Goes Down Tour to an end over the weekend with a three-night stand in Foxborough, Massachusetts at the Gillette Stadium. All three shows were packed with great music, big emotions, plenty of fun, and special guests. Saturday night (August 24), Chesney tapped Zac Brown for a handful of collaborations including a tribute to the late, great Jimmy Buffett.

Over the course of his long and storied career, Buffett touched countless listeners with his music. He also inspired a generation of artists including Chesney and Brown. More importantly, both country stars formed friendships with Buffett and recorded with them.

The Zac Brown Band opened for Chesney Saturday night. Later in the evening, Chesney enlisted brown to perform “Dixieland Delight” by Alabama. Then, the “Don’t Blink” singer addressed the crowd. “It’s been almost a year that me and Zac—well, not just me and Zac, all of us, world—lost a really great songwriter, singer/songwriter that touched us all with his heart, touched us all with his music,” Chesney said. Buffett died on the evening of September 1. “It only felt fitting tonight, Zac and I stand up here and pay tribute to our hero, can we do that for you tonight?” he concluded before they performed “Come Monday.” Watch the two perform the heartfelt tribute in the video above.

Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown Cover a Jimmy Buffett Classic

Jimmy Buffett left behind a deep catalog of songs for Kenny Chesney and Zac Brown to choose from. They could have easily chosen Buffett’s signature song, “Margaritaville.” Instead, they went with something a little more heartfelt.

Buffett wrote “Come Monday” and released it as the second single from his 1974 album Living & Dying in ¾ Time. The song wasn’t a huge hit for Buffett. It went to No. 30 on the all-genre Billboard Hot 100 chart, No. 3 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and No. 58 on the country chart. However, it became a staple of his live shows.

More than its popularity among fans, “Come Monday” seems like a fitting tribute to Buffett. He wrote the song for his wife while he was on tour. He was missing her and looking forward to being home with her. One could say that Chesney and Brown were missing Buffett and both look forward to the day when they’ll be reunited in the Hereafter.
