Liberal’s Kappelmann and Hugoton’s Martin Play in Shrine Bowl
It wasn’t the final team result they were looking for, but what a week for Liberal’s Brooks Kappelmann and Hugoton’s Isaac Martin who competed for the West in the Kansas Shrine Bowl football game Saturday night at Welch Stadium in Emporia. The East won the game 36-25 over the West. Kappelmann played quarterback for the West and was 29-51 for 235 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. He carried one time for six yards. Kappelmann was named Most Inspirational Player for the West at a ceremony on Friday night. Martin rotated in regularly at linebacker for the West. The two arrived in Hays Sunday June 23 and participated in West camp at Hays before departing for Emporia on Thursday. The game was played before a nearly capacity crowd Saturday night.
Emporia State Hall of Honor member Dave Bingham to be inducted into Kansas Sports Hall of Fame
Former Emporia State baseball coach Dave Bingham will be inducted into the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame later this year. Bingham is one of 12 inductees in this year’s class that was announced on Sunday. The class will be inducted on Sunday, October 13 in Topeka. Bingham played two seasons at Emporia State (1969-70) and returned as head coach in 1973. Bingham had a record of 557-270-2 from 1973 to 1987 as well as leading the Hornets to the 1978 NAIA National Championship. Bingham was named District 10 Coach of the Year 11 times and was a 3-time recipient of the NAIA Coach of the Year. After Emporia State, Bingham coached at The University of Kansas from 1988 to 1995 leading the Jayhawks to two NCAA Tournament appearances and one NCAA College World Series appearance in 1993. Bingham was the United States head coach for the 1984 World Cup and an assistant coach for the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, and the 1988 Baseball World Cup.
