    Man dead after shootout with police

    The Sumter County Sheriff’s office received a domestic all at approximately 8:15 pm on Wednesday August 7th. According to the call, an intoxicated male was acting erratically while in possession of a weapon. The caller and three children were locked inside the same residence, and the caller also reported the man had been “physical” with her.

    When deputies arrived on scene, they were met by a man with a rifle pointed in their direction. He fired, and deputies called for assistance as the man retreated into the residence. Additional units arrived and deputies attempted to talk with the man and get him to come out of the house without the rifle. The suspect came outside the residence and again fired the rifle. Deputies returned fire and the suspect retreated into the residence a second time. While this occurred, deputies helped the caller and the three children exit from the back of the building. Once they left, deputies entered the residence and found the subject lying on the floor. EMS attempted to render first aid but the suspect was dead. One of the deputies had been able to hit the suspect during the gunfire.

    According to the GBI, the victim has been identified as Jamie Lynn Still, age 45, of Americus GA. The home was in the 1100 block of South Georgia Tech Parkway in Americus GA. The GBI is still investigating the incident., and anyone with information is asked to call 229-931-2439.

    The Sheriff’s Department commented. “Our sincere condolences go out to the victim’ s family in this incident.” They also noted that they will be working with first responders and other individuals involved in the incident to provide any needed services.
