Dallas has partnered with Reliant to help residents who can't afford to pay for air conditioning units or their electricity bill in the summer heat.

"I don't know if you've gone to the store recently to look for one … they can be very, very pricey, and for some of our residents, it's just out of reach for them to be able to afford," Omar Narvaez, District 6 representative, said.

Reliant has donated 50 portable air conditioners and 150 evaporative cooling units to two city centers.

Only Dallas residents can apply to get an air conditioning unit, according to Ashley Hutto, manager of the West Dallas Multipurpose Center.

Senior citizens, coomunity members with disabilities, or families with young kids are eligible to apply for a unit either at the multipurpose center or they can do it over the phone if they have transportation difficulties.

"The way we do it here in West Dallas is you fill out an application, and then we distribute 10 to 12 units each Friday. We have products throughout the summer to be able to address emerging needs as the summer goes on," Hutto explained.
