Herbert “Cowboy” Coward of ‘Deliverance’ Killed in Crash in North Carolina

Herbert "Cowboy" Coward, who portrayed the Toothless Man in the 1972 film "Deliverance," has been confirmed to have died in a car accident in Haywood County on Wednesday afternoon by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

According to the NCHP, the collision happened on U.S. 19/23 between Clyde and Canton at about 3:30 p.m.

Troopers stated that a 16-year-old driver of a pickup truck hit 85-year-old Coward as he was leaving a parking lot.

Both the 78-year-old passenger, Bertha Brooks, and Coward both died at the scene. According to the police, neither passenger had on a seatbelt.

The victim's two pets, a squirrel and a chihuahua, perished in the collision as well, according to the troopers.

According to troopers, the 16-year-old was taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

There are currently no charges being filed.
