Fishing Report: Where anglers can — and can’t — fish, plus sockeye numbers in Kenai
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - The final fish have reeled in at Ship Creek for the next two weeks with the closure of sport fishing at the popular fishery though July 13. When the creek opens back up, there will be no retention of king salmon for the rest of the season.
3 bears killed by park rangers in Eklutna campground
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Alaska State Parks officials said that three black bears have been killed after repeated encounters with camp food at an Eklutna campground. In two separate incidents in late June, park officials wrote in a social media post that black bears were seen breaking into camp gear in search of food.

Planned expedition to mark 100th anniversary of Iditarod serum run
ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - Jonathan Hayes is the owner of the Poland Springs Seppala Kennels in Maine. His kennel is made up of dogs of the Seppala Siberian Husky breed. Hayes says his dogs are registered descendants of Leonhard Seppala’s dog team that participated in the life-saving serum run to Nome in 1925.

Ted Stevens Young Alaskan Artist Award Recital 2024 comes to Alaska PAC this month. The performance is on Thursday, Jul 25, 2024 at 7:30 PM at UAA Recital Hall. Luke Honeck is an Alaskan performer, music educator, and composer who is well-known to local music and theatre audiences. Praised as a “charismatic tenor,” Luke has recently appeared to great acclaim in two Anchorage Opera productions: as Nemorino in Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore and as Devon in the U.S. premiere of Missing by Brian Current. Luke also performs frequently with Alaska Chamber Singers, most recently as soloist in Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Grand Mass in C minor, and Bach’s B minor Mass. A graduate of West Anchorage High School, Luke holds a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from the Lawrence University Conservatory of Music and is a recipient of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Encouragement Award. This fall, Luke will attend the Eastman School of Music to pursue his master’s degree in vocal performance.

One of the many useful lessons my dad taught me growing up was to maintain your equipment. He did a lot of home improvement projects, and no matter how long and exhausting the day had been, before finishing he always took care of his tools. Paintbrushes would be cleaned and put in turpentine to soak, work areas would be cleaned up, and tools would be put away (“a place for everything, and everything in its place,” he would say).
