Young boy drowns in pond near Andover

A young boy died after he wandered off and drowned over the weekend near Andover.

The boy was reported missing Saturday from the home, the Butler County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Authorities were told that the child went missing while playing outside as an adult was doing yard work. Drones, divers and police dogs searched the heavily wooded property until the boy, 3, was found Sunday morning in a pond near the home.

The regional forensic science center confirmed that the cause of death was accidental drowning, the sheriff's office said.

Officials said the boy and another child had been placed into temporary foster care with relatives at the rural home, authorities said Tuesday.
