Devin Gardner is one of the highest rated quarterback recruits in Michigan football history and quietly finished his career in Ann Arbor with the third most passing yards of anyone to ever don the maize and blue helmet.

On Friday, Gardner revealed his thoughts on a hot shot Wolverines QB recruit for the class of 2025 — Carter Smith, a four-star prospect out of Fort Myers, Florida.

Gardner's thoughts were shared via Michigan Football On MGoBlue, during which Gardner revealed that he believes Smith could be a diamond in the rough. Smith is highly rated but isn't quite at that level elite prospects like JJ McCarthy and Chad Henne were coming out of high school in terms of his overall ranking.

"He's the perfect clay to form," Gardner said. "Big, strong, and serious about his business.

"That's exactly what you want...None of these quarterbacks are completely ready to perform on the stage they're looking to perform on. But can they get ready? Do they have the potential to get ready? I think he does," Gardner concluded.

The 6-foot-4, 180 pound Smith is also a varsity baseball player, a tradition Coach Sherrone Moore appears to be keeping alive after learning from former coach Jim Harbaugh's tried and true method of recruiting multi-sport stars.
