The finished product will require years of construction, but the end product will be a cutting-edge transit hub in place of the current 73-year-old New York City Port Authority Terminal. By 2032, the existing structure is to be demolished and replaced with an environmentally-friendly facility.

The Port Authority will return 3.5 acres to the neighborhood as green space after development is finished

"It will reflect world-class designs, high ceilings, light and airy atmosphere, riveting, inspiring, and appealing public art installations," said Rick Cotton, Port Authority Executive Director.

In addition to taking many years to finish, building the new structure will necessitate closing 41st Street between 8th and 9th avenues. A bus storage facility will also have to be built to handle bus operations in the interim. The total cost? Estimates are about $10 billion.

Public comments are part of the 45 days before construction on the project begins in earnest.

Tuesday's hearing, from 8:30 am to 10:30 am is the only planned in-person chance for the public comments, but additional virtual sessions will be held:

    • 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21
    • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 21
    • 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22
