Randall's Island: City's Largest Migrant Shelter Imposing Curfew

The Randall's Island migrant shelter, the city's largest, is going to impose a curfew later this month.

According to City Hall, this will align the shelter's curfew with the 186 other city-run shelters for homeless and migrating people.

The curfew from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. will start on March 20.

A police officer working an overnight shift at Randall's Island told The Post, "It's insane. It’s a powder keg. It’s reminiscent of the refugee camp in the movie Scarface. People are fighting. There are migrants jumping over the gates to get on the grounds. There were no metal detectors. I was surprised.”

Mayor Adams recently stated a metal detector will be installed at the shelter.

A city hall spokesperson issued the following statement:

"New York City continues to lead the nation in managing this national humanitarian crisis, and that includes prioritizing the health and safety of both asylum seekers in our care and New Yorkers who live in the communities surrounding the emergency shelters we manage. Beginning on March 20th, we will be instituting a curfew policy at our Randall's Island Humanitarian Emergency Response and Relief Center, in line with curfews already in place at traditional DHS shelters, HPD emergency shelters, and NYCEM respite sites that serve migrants and longtime New Yorkers experiencing homelessness. This policy will allow for more efficient capacity management for migrants in the city's care."

Exemptions to the curfew include legal or medical matters, travel to school or work, and emergencies.
