Red Robin Chronicles: March school district update

Did you know that the Antigo School district performance is partially measured by our Junior level students’ ACT scores?

Our 11th grade students work hard to prepare for the ACT by practicing covered content in core classes leading up to the test date, firming up their writing skills and by building their testing endurance and stamina. A practice test is administered prior to the test date in a small setting with an assigned proctor.

The goal is to get the students familiarized and comfortable in the test setting to ease some of the test anxiety and to practice timing. Breakfast is provided to all students on test day. After completion, they have the option to send their scores to five universities or tech schools, free of charge. Many students are looking to head to the workforce and many students hope to go to a tech school. No matter the destination of our students after high school, it is imperative that all students try their best.

The highest possible score on the ACT is 36. The current average ACT score is 19.5. A 27 ACT score puts you a good deal above the national average (20.8) and makes you eligible for acceptance at a vast majority of schools. It also makes you competitive at some selective institutions, as well as eligible for merit aid!

Our 9th and 10th graders are also taking the Pre-ACT, which is a great indicator on how they will do on the ACT. The Pre-ACT assessment measures the knowledge and skills students should have acquired by the time they reach each grade level. Their performance on the assessment will not affect any of their current grades. Please encourage your son or daughter to take the test seriously and do the best they can. The results of these tests will be used to help school staff make determinations or placements in classes to best support children.

On Tuesday, March 19, 2024, the Antigo High School will be administering the ACT Plus Writing state exam as well as the Pre-ACT assessment. These tests will be administered online, in a small group setting with an assigned teacher/proctor.

As some of the most influential people in your child’s life, you will have the opportunity to help him or her understand the importance of preparing for life after high school. While graduation day may seem far in the future, now is a critical time to make sure your child is prepared to take that next step after graduation, whether that means starting college or a career. At Antigo High School, we believe all students should be prepared for that next step. Assessing our students’ college and career readiness is an important piece of that preparation.

Our district performance is also measured by other state assessments. March is an important month across the district because many other grade levels take a state assessment called the Forward Exam. The Wisconsin Forward Exam is a test mandated by the state, designed to gauge how well students are performing in relation to our state standards. Wisconsin Students in Grades 3-8 will be participating in the English Language Arts and Math assessments. Students in grades 4 and 8 will also participate in the Science exam, and students in grades 4, 8, and 10 will participate in the Social Studies Exam. All families that have students who will be taking the Forward Exam should look for communication from their school.

The Antigo School District appreciates all of the support from the Antigo community as they wish our students success on their assessments in the months of March and April.
