Dave Portnoy rates Alternate Ending Beer Co.'s Detroit-style pizza

The score is in. Following a July 28 visit to Alternate Ending Beer Co. in Aberdeen, Dave Portnoy of YouTube's One Bite Pizza Reviews awarded the brewery's classic Detroit pizza a 7.2 out of 10.

"It's really good," said Portnoy , who has reviewed more than 1,000 pizzerias nationwide — including many at the Shore .

Alternate Ending, a craft brewery on Route 34, serves food from Talula's in Asbury Park and offers nine varieties of sourdough pan pizza, which comes in thick-crusted Detroit style and a thinner grandma style.

The Detroit is a chewy, cheesy-edged deep-dish pizza with tomato sauce, mozzarella, brick cheese, garlic, oregano and basil.

"This is a winter pizza. It looks heavy, it is heavy," said Portnoy, the founder and owner of Barstool Sports, known as El Presidente or @stoolpresidente on social media. "It's good stuff. Great taste."

Scott Novick, co-founder of Alternate Ending, said in an email Friday, Aug. 9, that "the most important part of Mr. Presidente’s review of our pizza is bringing attention to the community of Aberdeen.

"Every beer we brew says proudly brewed in Aberdeen, and with Lita next to door, we love the attention coming to our great town," Novick continued. "Regarding Dave’s review, I completely respect his opinion and score. I love Detroit style pizza, especially ours made by Talula’s. We use a high hydration sourdough that makes it airy inside but with the amount of cheese, it can definitely be a heavy slice.

"I think we do a great job of a crispy bottom, airy center [that complements] the decadent top," he added. "I also really respect his shout out to the vibe of Alternate Ending and the beers we sent him home with. That meant a lot!"

Portnoy gave Talula's a 7.1 rating when he visited in 2021.

During his Monmouth County visit last month, Portnoy also visited The Sauce in Oceanport. Gigi's New York Style Pizza in Sea Bright and Zachary's Restaurant in Long Branch.
