Sea Hear Now co-headliner Noah Kahan to appear on PBS Bruce Springsteen 'Nebraska' special

Bruce Springsteen fans attending the upcoming Sea Hear Now fest in Asbury Park might want to pay extra attention to co-headliner Noah Kahan.

The Vermont singer-songwriter covers the Boss' “Atlantic City” on the upcoming “Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska: A Celebration in Words and Music,” a narrated concert performance airing on PBS stations beginning on Saturday, Aug. 31 and available now on the PBS Passport service.

Emmylou Harris (“The Price You Pay,” “Nebraska”), Lyle Lovett (“Used Cars,” “My Father’s House”) and The Lumineers (“Mansion on the Hill,” “State Trooper”) also play in the show, which showcases songs from Springsteen's lo-fi classic “Nebraska,” released in 1982.

The album is composed of demos Springsteen recorded on a Teac 4-track recorder in a Colts Neck farmhouse. The original intent was to record and release the songs with the E Street Band, but the decision was made to leave them as they were.

Eric Church (“Dancing in the Dark”) and Lucinda Williams (“Born in the U.S.A.”) also perform. Their songs are from the “Nebraska” follow up, “Born in the U.S.A.”

The performances were filmed Sept. 9, 2023, at Analog at the Hutton Hotel in Nashville.

Warren Zanes, author of “Deliver Me from Nowhere: The Making of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska,” provides narration for the special.

“I wrote a book about 'Nebraska' because the recording stayed with me over decades,” said Zanes in a statement. “Every time there was trouble in my life I reached for 'Nebraska.' When I started doing events around the book’s publication, I quickly realized the best of them had music. When I went to Nashville, I had a remarkable cast of musicians to help me tell this story.”

A movie version of “Deliver Me from Nowhere” is in the works. Scott Cooper (“Crazy Heart”) is writing a screenplay and will direct and Jeremy Allen White, star of “The Bear,” will star as Springsteen.

Kahan, whose hits include “Stick Season,” “Northern Attitude,” “Dial Drunk and “Forever,” headlines Saturday, Sept. 14 at the upcoming Sea Hear Now on the beach in Asbury Park. His set is scheduled to begin 9 p.m. Springsteen and the E Street Band headline Sunday, Sept. 15 and they go on at 7:30 p.m.

The Gaslight Anthem, the Trey Anastasio Band, the Black Crowes, Norah Jones, 311, the Revivalists, Kool & The Gang, the Hives and more will play over the two days on the fest’s three stages on the North Beach and in Bradley Park.

Tickets are sold out. Prices for Sunday start at $450 on the secondary market. Visit www.seahearnow.com for more info.

In other news, Springsteen paid tribute in concert and online to the late Charles Cross, a music journalist and founder of the Springsteen journal Backstreets.

“His great writing and his influence and his help communicating between our band and our fans will be sorely missed,” said Springsteen Aug. 18 from the stage of the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh prior to a performance of “Backstreets.” “This is for Charles Cross.”

Cross, who also wrote biographies on Kurt Cobain and Jimi Hendrix, passed away on Aug. 9 at the age of 67.
