The Arizona Weatherman likes to try local restaurants in his area. Today, the author feasted on a good-sized burrito at the 86 Café. This café is located at 700 E 4th St, Benson, Arizona, across the street from the Napa auto parts store in town. Caution: If you use Google Maps, it will direct you to 700 W 4th St, which is about a mile and a half away from the establishment. It's not an issue for the locals, but if you are coming in off the I-10, that could cause some confusion.

Back to the review. The 86 Café, a cherished family-owned and run local business since 1991, is a testament to the community spirit of Benson, Arizona. The owner, Pedro Santiago, met with me and shared his passion for his establishment. The café, with its older rustic Mexican decor, exudes a warm, welcoming atmosphere. It's a place where you can enjoy a hearty Mexican/American meal and feel like part of the family. The service was prompt and friendly, and the waitress was the owner's daughter, adding a personal touch to the dining experience.

Pedro said most patrons like his burritos, combo meals, and burgers as favorites. My experience was a good one. I ordered the beef and green chili burrito. It did come with chips and salsa as an appetizer. The chips were warm and freshly made, and the salsa was on the light side for spice. The burrito was piping hot and fresh. It was covered in Mexican cheese and had some side garnishment. There was only one type of salsa, so I topped off my burrito with some Tobasco Sauce for added heat. The portion size was good and filled me up. I also ordered a fountain Mountain Dew before realizing they had bottled Mexican soda. I got a Mexican Coke as well. This really hit the spot.

The bottom line is that if you want a fancy Mexican restaurant with a lot of extras, multiple salsa choices, and more frills, this is not your place. If you prefer good-tasting, large portions at a great price, then this is the establishment for you. One thing to note: the restaurant will be closed from 1-29 July due to a family vacation. However, in August, if you want a good choice of Mexican/American food fare, come check out this location. Just remember not to use Google Maps to find it.
