Armstrong High School girls softball returned to action last week, following up on an exciting 2023 run to the section final with a returning roster for the Class of 2024. The Falcons ended last season 6-6 in Northwest Suburban Conference play and 11-11 overall.
In the Section 6AAAA tournament, they dominated Washburn 10-0, before beating Wayzata 9-6 in the quarterfinals. A loss to Hopkins made for a Wayzata rematch, which won Armstrong again, this time 12-5. The Falcons then rematched Hopkins in a nail biting section championship game, which the Royals won 2-1. Hopkins eventually went on to win the Class AAAA consolation final.
Armstrong’s first challenge came against Spring Lake Park on March 4, with the Falcons falling 6-5 to the Panthers on the road after having the season opener against Champlin Park postponed by weather.
Armstrong retains a strong core from last season, in part because of the strength of their senior class, many of which earned considerable varsity minutes as juniors last year. This season’s senior class includes centerfielder Elizabeth Brey, third baseman Claire Riestenberg, pitcher Peyton Erickson, and right fielder Sam Lind.
Underclassmen will be sure to play a role as they have in recent years, whether it be juniors like Gabriella Berns and Sydney Primmer, or sophomores Lexi Madson and Brianna Dumas.
