An early morning fire destroyed a shop, an attached guest house and damaged a home in Arroyo Grande on Friday — displacing three residents, according to Five Cities Fire Authority Chief Scott Hallett.

When the Five Cities Fire Authority arrived on the scene at 12:30 a.m., it found a fully engulfed structure fire on Via La Barranca between Ladera Place and Colina Street.

The fire sparked in a shop on the property and spread to the attached guest house, destroying both buildings, Hallett said.

The primary home on the property also caught fire, he said. The flames severely damaged the garage, and the rest of the house suffered from smoke damage.

The house was not habitable and three residents were displaced, Hallett said.

    No injuries were reported.

The fire also destroyed three vehicles, a boat and three recreational vehicles, he said.

The blaze then spread to the hillside behind the home, causing the fire department to evacuate about six houses at the top of the hill, Hallett said.

Firefighters contained the brush fire to an eighth of an acre then extinguished it.

Firefighters closed Via La Barranca to though traffic from about 12:30 to 8 a.m., he said.

The Five Cities Fire Authority, Cal Fire, and fire departments from Guadalupe, San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay and Atascadero used eight fire engines and one ladder truck to extinguish the blaze.

A few diesel tanks in the shop leaked during the fire, so the Arroyo Grande Public Works Department plugged nearby storm drains to prevent it from impacting the environment, Hallett said. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and San Luis Obispo County Environmental Health Services determined that no significant quantity of diesel leaked into the environment.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
