Major California Job Cuts as Walmart Reduces Local Workforce

In a major downsizing move, retail giant Walmart is eliminating hundreds of jobs in the San Francisco Bay Area. According to filings with the California Employment Development Department, a total of 568 employees across Walmart's Sunnyvale and San Bruno locations will be laid off effective August 9th.

The cuts will hit hard in Sunnyvale, where 180 workers at the West California Avenue office received pink slips. But the brunt of the layoffs is being felt in San Bruno, with 388 employees at the 850 Cherry Ave. facility losing their positions.

Walmart framed the job cuts as relatively small in a statement from Chief People Officer Donna Morris.

"Some parts of our business have made changes that will result in a reduction of several hundred campus roles. While the overall numbers are small in percentage, we are focused on supporting each of our associates affected by these changes," Morris said.

Despite the company's assurances, the loss of nearly 600 jobs is sure to sting both the impacted workers and the surrounding communities that benefited from Walmart's hiring and operating footprint. The layoffs also add to the mounting toll of job cuts in California this year.
