The Florida State Seminoles, Miami Hurricanes, and Nebraska Cornhuskers all had varying success during the 1990s and early 2000s. Florida State won national championships in 1993 and 1999, Miami won in 1991 and 2001, and Nebraska claimed national titles from 1994-95 and in 1997.

However, the road back to relevance has been difficult for some. The Cornhuskers last played in a bowl game in 2016. Despite its recent struggles, Joel Klatt was "high on" Nebraska. He discussed his stance on a recent episode of "The Joel Klatt Show."

Klatt noted how close some of Nebraska's losses were last season. Rhule led Nebraska to a 5-7 record in 2023.

"Nebraska, I'm high on this program," Klatt said. "It's a team that went 5-7 last year. Now, just on its face, that doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. However, if you just dig a little bit on what Nebraska and Matt Rhule was last year, they lost four of those games by exactly three points, and they turned it over 15 times in those games. Those can easily become wins."

The Cornhuskers added plenty of talent in the offseason. Rhule was able to flip former five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola from the Georgia Bulldogs. Raiola was the No. 3 QB from the 2024 class, per the On3 Industry Rankings .

Other highlights from Nebraska's 2024 recruiting class include former four-star tight end Carter Nelson , former four-star inside offensive lineman Grant Brix , and former four-star cornerback Mario Buford .

Nebraska also utilized the transfer portal to its advantage. The Cornhuskers added players like former Wake Forest Demon Deacons receiver Jahmal Banks, former Texas Longhorns WR Isaiah Neyor, former USC Trojans cornerback Ceyair Wright, and former Oregon Ducks running back Dante Dowdell from the transfer portal.

The Cornhuskers kick off the 2024 campaign against the UTEP Miners on Aug. 31.
