Olympic Reporter Facing Backlash After Ruining Australian Skateboarder's Pet Duck Moment

Fans couldn't help but slam a reporter after she ruined what could have been a wholesome moment with Australian Olympic gold medalist Arisa Trew.

On Tuesday, Trew became Australia's youngest Olympic medalist after winning gold at the women’s park skateboarding event in Paris. She was 14 years old and 86 days old at the time of her win, surpassing Sandra Morgan who was 14 years and 183 days when she secured gold for Australia in swimming in 1956.

After her victory, Trew shared with reporters that her parents promised to give her a pet duck should she win at the Olympics. Naturally, the young girl was excited by the idea of finally getting the pet she really wanted.

"The gift I asked from my parents if I, like, won was if I could get a pet duck because ducks are really cute and I really wanted a pet duck," Trew shared, adding that she plans to take her duck on walks and to skateparks. She also already has a name in mind: "Goldie."

It was definitely an adorable moment, but an inappropriate follow-up statement from a reporter spoiled it and turned a lot of heads.

"You know, ducks are delicious," the unidentified reporter can be heard saying in the video, per Associated Press. Trew could only smile awkwardly and reply, "I've never eaten a duck."

Sure enough, fans were quick to criticize the reporter for the question, especially since Arisa Trew was genuinely looking forward to her pet duck. At the end of the day, she didn't need the unsolicited remarks.

"Honestly the reporter comment was absolutely unnecessary and unkind. She’s just a kid, a very kind one and she’s very excited about having a duck as a pet," a critic said. Another one agreed, "That comment is the most inappropriate and offensive thing I’ve ever heard. What is wrong with her? Why would she spoil this moment for a 14 year old girl who just wants to have a pet?

A commenter added, "I eat meat but respectfully, the comment of “ you know ducks are delicious “ is just so inappropriate and rude … like ?!!?? Why?!?"

"Straight to jail for the “ducks are delicious” reporter. Don’t ruin the vibes for this baby," a social media user furthered.

"Adorable. And yeah like pretty much everyone : wtf is wrong with that reporter ?!" a fifth fan noted.

Trew handled the statement pretty well, especially for a 14-year-old. Hopefully, it didn't lessen her excitement to get her pet duck when she comes home.
