The Washington Commanders faced a significant test during their joint practice with the New York Jet s, a matchup that offered both challenges and opportunities for growth under new head coach Dan Quinn. As the Commanders prepare for the 2024 season, this practice served as a critical evaluation point, exposing both strengths and weaknesses within the team.

One of the standout observations was the dominance of the Commanders' defensive line. Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen , who anchor the interior, continued to show why they are considered among the NFL's elite. The duo, along with edge rushers Dorance Armstrong Jr. and Clelin Ferrel, disrupted the Jets' offense throughout the session, proving that Washington's front line can be a formidable force this season. Allen, in particular, looked revitalized after trade rumors during the offseason, demonstrating leadership and tenacity that set the tone for the defense.

However, not all aspects of the Commanders' performance were as encouraging. Emmanuel Forbes Jr ., the team's first-round pick in 2023, struggled significantly against the Jets' receivers, particularly Garrett Wilson. Forbes was frequently beaten in coverage, gave up several big plays, and even found himself involved in a skirmish out of frustration. This underwhelming display has only intensified concerns about his development and long-term role on the team.

The practice also served as a reality check for the Commanders, highlighting the gap between them and teams with playoff aspirations like the Jets. While the defensive line's performance was a bright spot, the overall showing suggested that Washington has more work to do before they can realistically contend in the NFC East .

Quinn and general manager Adam Peters undoubtedly have much to consider as they approach the regular season. The potential is there, particularly on the defensive front, but translating that into consistent, team-wide success will require continued focus and improvement.
