The Miami Marlins played Game One of their three-game weekend home series with the San Diego Padres on Friday night and lost 6-2. This game went into extra innings after Miami’s closer George Soriano blew a 2-1 save chance in the ninth.

It was a great start for the Marlins as they got two runs on back-to-back solo homers from Jake Burger and Jonah Bride in the fourth inning. However, that was all the scoring they did after they only managed four hits all night. The offense struck out six times, four of them came from Padres starting pitcher Martín Pérez, who had a quality outing with two runs allowed on three hits during seven innings pitched.

Marlins starter Edward Cabrera also had a good outing on Friday. He didn’t give up a run and only allowed four hits in seven innings. Afterward, when the bullpen came in, it all fell apart as they allowed six runs, and four came from a rough tenth inning.

This loss puts the Marlins at 43-74. Before Friday’s game, they announced many roster moves and claimed former Cleveland Guardians pitcher Xzavion Curry off waivers.

For the Padres, they are currently at the top National League wild-card spot by three games after Friday’s win. The Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets are behind them trying to catch up, while the Atlanta Braves remain in the hunt.

These two teams will continue the series on Saturday. The Padres have yet to announce a starter while the Marlins will send Roddery Muñoz to the mound.
