Fields: 'We Were Shooting Ourselves In The Foot!'

While his first outing as a Pittsburgh Steeler wasn’t all bad, quarterback Justin Fields was not happy with the miscues. Twice on early downs there was a mishandled snap exchange resulting in two fumbles that thankfully the offense recovered.

Second-year center Nate Herbig is embroiled in a position battle with rookie Zach Frazier, who the Steelers took in the second round of this year’s NFL draft.

Following the game Herbig, to his credit, took the blame for the fumbled snaps, saying they were “100-percent my fault.”

Fields let his frustration show on Friday night when discussing the game and the mistakes.

“We were shooting ourselves in the foot — all three phases, fumbled snaps,” he said.

Fields, who is also competing for the starting position with veteran Russell Wilson, made a couple of good plays under duress for positive yardage down the field. He also took two sacks on third down.

The offensive line has a long way to go to gel and come together to shore up the protection, but overall, Fields completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards and he didn’t turn the ball over.

Russell Wilson is the expected starter next week against the Buffalo Bills. Following his exit from the game, Fields will likely be given considerably more playing time to put his skills on display.

The Steelers return to the practice field at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA on Sunday.
