The New York Mets Were Thoroughly Defeated Last Night

Bryce Miller led the way for the Mariners. Miller had a very comfortable outing. The only real chances off him came from two out doubles in the second and third innings. In both situations, Miller stranded a runner on second.

The young right hander was very dominant, allowing 3 hits in six innings while striking out six.

Jose Quintana pitched well for the Mets, but he had no chance against Miller. In the second inning, Quintana left a first pitch curveball over the plate. The veteran probably felt relatively comfortable throwing a ‘get me over’ curveball in that situation. He was facing eight hitter Ryan Bliss, who only had one home run going into the game. But Bliss was ready. He clearly sat on the pitch and he did not miss it. That curveball is certainly a pitch Quintana wants back.

The left hander settled in after the home run. He retired the next fourteen batters he faced. Quintana kept Seattle at bay and gave the Mets a chance to come back.

The score was still 2-0 heading into the top of the seventh. With Miller out of the game, the Mets finally created a real run scoring chance.

J.D. Martinez and Jeff McNeil both reached base to start the inning but Mark Vientos GIDP and Francisco Alvarez flew out to end the Mets’ potential threat.

After Quintana had cruised through six, Carlos Mendoza understandably sent him out for the seventh. The first two hitters got on then Quintana got the next two hitters out. Quintana was one out away from seven very strong innings but he could not get the final out. A base hit made it 4-0.

Adam Ottavino then came in. He did not impress. It was bad timing for Ottavino to have a bad outing after talking about his worth to the team just two days prior. Ottavino finally got an out after allowing the first three batters he faced to reach base.

Quintana’s statline does not reflect the success he had last night. Quintana ended his day with five earned runs.

New York’s lineup looked completely outmatched and not in control at the plate. It does not get any easier as they face Logan Gilbert tonight.
