Top-graded Bears in preseason win over Bills

Not only were the Chicago Bears back in action on Saturday but fans finally got their first glimpse of Caleb Williams and other starters in a game setting.

Most of the starters played only the first two drives before giving way to the backups.

Nevertheless, let’s take a look at Pro Football Focus’s highest-graded players from Chicago’s second preseason game.

    Offense

    • C Doug Kramer — 91.5
    • RB Ian Wheeler — 90.7
    • LG Teven Jenkins — 90.3
    • WR DJ Moore — 81.3
    • RT Bill Murray — 77.1
    • RT Aviante Collins — 75.3
    • TE Cole Kmet — 74.1
    • QB Austin Reed — 73.9
    • QB Caleb Williams — 73.5
    • RB Travis Homer — 70.4

Meanwhile, Chicago’s lowest-graded offensive players on Saturday were RT Darnell Wright (45.0), C Jerome Calvin (47.0), TE Gerald Everett (47.5), RB Khalil Herbert (47.5) and RG Matt Pryor (52.0).

Those numbers mostly pass the eye test, as Williams and Reed looked really nice, the offensive line was mostly solid and Wheeler led the team in rushing and had two touchdowns.

    Defense

    • LB Micah Baskerville — 97.0
    • LB Amen Ogbongbemiga — 89.1
    • S Quindell Johnson — 86.6
    • DE Khalid Kareem — 84.6
    • CB Jaylon Johnson — 83.2
    • DE Austin Booker — 79.6
    • DT Zacch Pickens — 72.5
    • CB Jaylon Jones — 72.3
    • LB Jack Sanborn — 70.6
    • S Jonathan Owens — 70.1

The lowest-graded Bears defenders were S Kevin Byard (29.8), S Douglas Coleman II (34.8), LB Tremaine Edmunds (47.3), LB Carl Jones Jr. (49.0) and LB Javin White (49.7).

Again, those numbers mostly pass the eye test, although some are a little surprising. Baskerville, for instance, had the pick-six but only had two tackles and didn’t seem that incredible. Additionally, Booker and Daniel Hardy each had 2.5 sacks while Pickens had 1 but Hardy had a middle-of-the-pack 64.0 grade.

Dominique Robinson didn’t seem to flash again and made only one tackle but had a 67.9 grade, and it’s at least mildly concerning to see Edmunds as low as he is, given last year’s struggles and the fact the Bears need more from him in 2024 .

Meanwhile, Nsimba Webster, Brenden Bates and Owens were the special teams standouts, per PFF.

Players have two more weeks to put together good stretches and flash in the preseason as they try to solidify roles and roster spots. Here were the top-graded players from the Hall of Fame Game.

Chicago is back in action next Saturday at noon against the Cincinnati Bengals .
