Former Super Bowl champion and current ESPN analyst Damien Woody shared insights on Monday about what could hinder Justin Fields' success in the NFL.

Woody emphasized that Fields must eliminate negative plays to rejuvenate his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and secure the starting quarterback position.

“That will prohibit you from being the starting quarterback right there,” Woody said on ESPN's 'Get Up' . “You can’t have negative plays.”

The Steelers faced a setback in their preseason opener, losing 20-12 to the Houston Texans. While preseason games don't always reflect a team's overall performance, individual efforts are scrutinized closely.

Fields, who had a challenging outing, completed 5-of-6 passes for 67 yards. He was sacked twice and fumbled twice during three series, with the fumbles occurring on his first two drives due to bad snap exchanges.

Head coach Mike Tomlin echoed Woody's sentiments after the game, acknowledging that while Fields showed some positive moments, the fumbles overshadowed his performance.

"It negated a lot of good things going on in those first couple of drives," Tomlin said.

Fields will need to avoid such mistakes to compete effectively against Russell Wilson for the starting role.

Wilson, who missed the game due to a calf injury, will be evaluated in the Steelers' upcoming preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.

Both Fields and Wilson are expected to see action in separate drives.
