Former College Football Star Jake Fromm Signs With New NFL Team

Former University of Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm is a Detroit Lion, the team announced on Monday.

Backup Hendon Hooker suffered a concussion in Detroit's opening preseason game against the Giants. New York walked away with a 14-3 win at MetLife Stadium. While Hooker is expected to return without limitations ahead of the 2024 season, the Lions brought in Fromm to take snaps alongside veteran Nate Sudfeld.

Fromm (6-foot-2, 216 pounds) was originally drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round in 2020. He spent the last two seasons with the Washington Commanders and did not play in game, serving primarily on the practice squad. Most of Fromm's on-field experience came as a Giant in 2021, starting in two of three appearances and passing for 210 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

At Georgia, Fromm led the Bulldogs to the national championship game as a true freshman in 2017. Alabama squeaked out an overtime win, but Fromm went on to earn Freshman All-American and SEC Freshman of the Year honors.

Fromm's NFL career has yet to match the numbers and wins he put up as a Bulldog, but the 26-year-old still has plenty of treads left, and NFL teams obviously see him as a viable backup option. Fromm will have the chance to show what he can this weekend.

The Lions will travel to the Chiefs for their second preseason matchup on Aug. 17. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. ET.
