Five-Star Prospect Commits To Unexpected Program Over CFB Powerhouses

Five-star offensive lineman Josh Petty made his commitment decision on Monday, choosing to play for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets over some of college football's winningest programs.

Petty (6-foot-5, 265 pounds) plays for Fellowship Christian School in Roswell, Georgia. He is rated as the No. 2 offensive tackle, the No. 4 player in the state, and the No. 14 prospect overall in the class of 2025, per 247Sports.

Petty ultimately chose Georgia Tech over Ohio State, Tennessee, Florida State and Stanford. He took visits to each of his final schools in June.

Petty is the highest-rated recruit to commit to Georgia Tech since Calvin Johnson in 2004.

Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key has done a commendable job in resurrecting Georgia Tech from the bottom of the ACC. Key took over for Geoff Collins in 2022 and led the team to a 4-4 record before finishing 7-6 last season. The Yellow Jackets nearly knocked off in-state rival Georgia on the road but fell short 31-23.

Recruiting is a sticking point for Georgia Tech's chances at contending in the expanded ACC and playing for a chance at a national championship, something that hasn't been done in Atlanta since 1990.

Petty's pledge is a monumental win for Key and his staff in building toward those goals. A two-way player for Fellowship Christian, Petty also totaled 58 tackles (9 for loss), 5.0 sacks, 1 interception and 1 fumble recovery on defense as a junior.

Georgia Tech's 2025 class now sits at No. 20 in the nation, per 247Sports rankings.
