Phillies Edmundo Sosa Ranks Among Games Best Utility Players

The Philadelphia Phillies (69-49) enter Tuesday tied for the best record in the National League. While their roster is more complete than most, especially offensively, there have been occasions where they have needed a utility man. Enter Edmundo Sosa .

In a recent article from Bleacher Report , Joel Reuter ranked the game's top 10 players at each position right now. After ranking sixth in last month's power rankings, Sosa ranks 10th in the latest edition.

The Phillies acquired Sosa from the St. Louis Cardinals via trade ahead of the 2022 MLB Trade Deadline in return for reliever JoJo Romero . He has been a utility man for the Phillies ever since and entered 2024 with a career .252/.311/.396 line with 18 home runs, 78 RBI, and a 95 OPS+.

Sosa, 28, has been even better this season. He enters Tuesday with a .276/.329/.459 batting line with six home runs, 26 RBI, and a 120 OPS+. Sosa has manned three different positions for the Phillies this season, second base, third base, and shortstop, as well as designated hitting.

In the field, Sosa has been above average at the three positions he has manned for the Phillies this season. He has accrued four Outs Above Average at shortstop, one OAA at third base, and one OAA at second base per Baseball Savant. His six combined OAAs place him in the top eight percent of MLB.

Sosa's position in the power rankings has fallen seemingly because of a lack of playing time. He has only accrued 29 plate appearances over the last 28 days, and while he has performed well in those, other utility players have seen the field more often.
