As the Pittsburgh Steelers continue to evaluate their roster during the 2024 preseason, the wide receiver position has emerged as a key area of focus.
Recent Pro Football Focus ( PFF ) grades provide insight into the performance of the Steelers' receiving corps, with Dez Fitzpatrick and George Pickens leading the way. Here’s a closer look at how the Steelers' wide receivers fared and what it could mean for the upcoming season.

Dez Fitzpatrick delivered an impressive showing, earning the highest PFF grade among Steelers wide receivers with an 85.2. Fitzpatrick's performance on the field has solidified his role within the offense, particularly as he consistently demonstrated his ability to make critical catches and contribute to the team’s offensive rhythm. His strong preseason performance positions him as a key player in the Steelers' receiving rotation as they prepare for the regular season.
George Pickens also made his mark, posting a PFF grade of 78.5. Pickens, who has been a reliable target in Pittsburgh’s offense, continued to show his potential to become a top receiving option for the team. His ability to make plays downfield and in contested situations adds a dynamic element to the Steelers’ passing game, making him a valuable asset as the season progresses.
Van Jefferson , another key receiver, received a grade of 69.6, solidifying his status as a starting wide receiver for the Steelers. Jefferson’s presence on the field during all three of the starters’ drives underscores his importance to the offensive scheme. Notably, Jefferson remained on the sideline when backups entered the game, further indicating his established role on the team. With Brandon Aiyuk trade rumors cooling, Jefferson appears set to be a consistent contributor throughout the season.
The slot receiver position remains a question mark, particularly with rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson sidelined due to a left ankle sprain. Wilson, who was vying for the slot role, is considered week-to-week. In his absence, Calvin Austin III took the majority of the slot snaps out of 11 personnel with the starters, as listed on the initial depth chart. Austin’s performance in this role will be crucial in determining who secures the slot receiver position for the regular season.
As the Steelers continue to fine-tune their roster, the wide receiver rotation will be an area to watch closely. With standout performances from Fitzpatrick, Pickens, and Jefferson, Pittsburgh’s passing attack is shaping up to be a formidable force in 2024. The upcoming preseason games will be critical in solidifying these roles and ensuring the Steelers are ready to compete when the regular season begins.
