Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy to undergo surgery for meniscus injury

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will undergo surgery for a meniscus tear, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapaport.

McCarthy didn't practice with the team on Monday night after there was reportedly some "right knee soreness" and was said to be held out for precautionary reasons.

Team officials later confirmed the news for the Vikings quarterback.

The surgery will determine how long the rookie will miss time, as per any kind of meniscus injury treated. It could range anywhere from a few weeks to months, depending on if it's a trim or full repair.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell gave credit to McCarthy for continuing to play in the game despite the injury, as he finally came out after throwing his second touchdown and had hit his snap count to exit.

“I had a very clear-cut plan of working with J.J. and getting more reps on the field. And obviously coming off a performance like he had where we felt strongly about where he was at and his development process, so really you just hurt for him, in the short term here because he had such a daily process, focus — all those things," O'Connell said.

Sam Darnold is now in line to be the starter come Week 1 against the New York Giants.

McCarthy was the No. 10 overall pick in this year's draft and has mostly worked with the Vikings-second team offense throughout training camp. However, he had an impressive showing in Saturday's preseason opener against the Las Vegas Raiders, completing 11 of 17 passes for 188 yards, 2 touchdowns, and an interception.

The team is heading to Cleveland this week for two joint practices and a preseason game on Saturday. McCarthy won't be traveling with the team. O'Connell mentioned the team may "look at" some quarterbacks to add to the roster.

Currently, the Vikings have Darnold, Nick Mullins and Jaren Hall.
