Could Kevin Durant join Anthony Edwards on the Timberwolves?

It wouldn't be the first time the Minnesota Timberwolves gambled their future on a big-name superstar.

Many of the bigger media networks have been speculating as the Paris Olympics was ongoing which NBA stars could team up, and Anthony Edwards and Kevin Durant have appeared to have drawn the most attention.

It all started when Edwards made it known the player he's looked up to in his young basketball career is Durant and the two have essentially been inseparable during the Olympics.

"I think everybody here knows that's my favorite player of all time. That was probably one of the best feelings every in my whole life for sure," Edwards said during his trash-talking exchange with Durant during the NBA Playoffs this spring.

Durant has recognized the admiration and shown his appreciation for the young, budding star, saying he loves "everything about Ant."

Former NBA player and champion Kendrick Perkins said he could see the team-up happen between the two, naming some others as well while of ESPN's First Take this week.

"After this NBA season, we might see some moving parts. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a reunion with Steph Curry and KD or LeBron James and Steph actually making it happen, or we see Kevin Durant go to Minnesota with Anthony Edwards because we saw they had a signature handshake. Those relationships happen, man," Perkins said on Monday.

Basketball analyst Nick Wright also made a mention on the latest episode of First Things First , this time proposing the Timberwolves trade Karl Anthony-Towns for Durant.

“Listen, the Karl-Anthony Towns for Kevin Durant trade is still just sitting out there if anyone wants to do it,” Wright said.

Fans — and specifically Minnesota fans — would love to see a team-up such as this, but the Timberwolves would have to make some massive changes to its roster since they already are dealing with luxury tax issues due to contracts on the current roster.

Moving Towns and his max contract is the first to come to mind, since he's also likely the best player to dangle in a trade offer but it would likely take more than just the Wolves' three-point shooting big man.

The Phoenix Suns are coming off a disappointing season in which they were swept by the Timberwolves in the first round of the NBA Playoffs. If the Suns hit yet another lowpoint, it could all but be certain that Durant may want to seek his final playing days elsewhere for an actual contender.

Durant turns 36 in September and has two more years on his contract with Phoenix. According to Spotrac, he's owed $51 million this season and $54.7 million next year.

If the Timberwolves were to trade for Durant involving Towns, and Durant became a free agent after the 2025-26 season, the team wouldn't have to face such heavy luxury tax penalties because with Towns' contract not set to expire until 2028 — unless he declines the $61 million player option ahead of the 2027-28 season.

For now, Wolves fans can sit and dream about the possibility. But the fanbase saw what happened when it traded away a pick that became Lauri Markkanen and Zach LaVine for Jimmy Butler in 2018... which turned out to be a disaster for Minnesota, despite reaching the playoffs finally.
